This zone is located northwest of Sacramento along the west side of Interstate 5. With the majority of the elk found on private land, you may want to check on access availability/cost before spending that tag money and points.
Elk within the hunt area are almost entirely on private property. These lands are open to elk hunting only with the written permission of the landowner.
Terrain varies from moderate to steep grades without high elevations and nice scenery. The elevations are not extreme but the vegetation and ravines of the unit can be barriers to an effective harvest.
Interstate 5 will get you access to the roads headed west through the town of Maxwell, which then will lead you to a network of forest and county roads.
The vegetation is highly varied throughout the zone ranging from scrubs, mixed chaparral and oak-hardwood forests to mixed chaparral, oak-grassland and dense conifer forests.
Nearby camping is available at campgrounds near lakes such as Stony Gorge, East Park Reservoir. Open dispersed camping is available in the surrounding forest.
