This open prairie south of Limon and east of Calhan is mainly private. Some herds of antelope, mule deer and whitetails roam areas that see very few people. Elk are rarely seen.
Flat prairie, rolling hills and plateaus along with gullies long draws and intermittent flowing creeks such as Horse Creek, South Creek, Middle Creek and North Rush Creek define this portion of the state.
Landowners are more likely to allow access during the week for antelope hunting than during opening weekend. Getting permission to hunt whitetails, mule deer can be more difficult.
Major highways are Interstate 70, Colorado Routes 93 and 71. Calhan Highway runs north and south from Calhan to Colorado Route 93 and County Road 149 runs north and south from Matheson to Colorado Route 93. Both connect with many other county and secondary roads heading east and west.
Extensive short-grass prairie, sections of dryland and center pivot irrigated crops, sagebrush, Russian thistle, yucca, cottonwoods and Russian olive can be seen across this area.
Limon, along Interstate 70, is the largest community in the unit providing motels, restaurants, gas, diesel fuels and medical care. Hugo on U.S. 40 has the closest medical facility. Small towns of Calhan and Matheson have gas and cafes.
