Northeast of Trinidad between Apishapa and Purgatoire Rivers is an expansive open prairie with canyons that is home to mule deer, whitetail, antelope and elk. Access is difficult to obtain on land that is mainly private.
Tyrone Flats, Tyler Hills, East Draw, Juan Baca Canyon, Apishapa and Purgatoire Rivers and Wild Horse Arroyo are prominent landforms that distinguish an area of open prairie, rolling hills, plateaus, and steep canyons.
BLM: about 500 acres are north of Hoehne on County Road 83.
State land: Apishapa 640 acres *difficult to access as you have to cross the Apishapa Canyon. Interstate 25 along the west and U.S. Highway 350 in the south makes it efficient to connect with many county and secondary roads.
Broad open shortgrass prairie with grazing lands of blue grama and buffalo grass, hills and plateaus marked with pinion/juniper, long sand sage flat, yucca, cactus, irrigated crops and cottonwoods near creek beds.
Communities of Trinidad, in southwest and La Junta, in northeast provide motels, restaurants, gas and diesel, groceries and medical facilities.
