This bighorn sheep hunting area is on the south side of the Salmon River and is in between the Idaho County-Valley County line and drains into the South Fork of the Salmon River.
This is a new sheep hunting area in the Salmon River Mountains. Most of it is roadless with part of it inside the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Some rams can be found in lightly timbered areas.
Steep, rough mountains and broken-up country make up this unit, which is mostly designated wilderness. High peaks in this unit are 8,774-foot Mosquito Peak, 8,965-foot Profile Peak, 6,988-foot Smith Knob and 8,057-foot Pilot Peak. Land drains into the South Fork of the Salmon River.
A lot of hunters in this unit hike in or use horses. A primitive road gives access to some starting points and a few vantage points, like Pilot Peak. The road is open to all vehicles, but is better for ATVs. It circles through the unit, climbing Smith Knob and gives access to a couple of ATV trails.
Most of this unit is heavily forested or covered by burned-out forests. There are a lot of ponderosa pines, lodgepole pines and several species of firs and spruce in this area. Most south and west-facing slopes are open, covered by low shrubs and grasses.
Unless you hire an outfitter, plan to pack in a tent. Spike camping from a backpack tent can be easier, giving hunters the chance to cover as much country as possible while scouting or hunting.
