This area is located west of Highway 120, just north of Cody. This is considered one of the better mule deer units in the state and provides hunters with good opportunities to take older deer.
The deer migration depends on the weather, but chances to hunt both the migration and the peak of the rut are good.
The terrain is steep and difficult off of the north aspects of Bald Ridge and Pat O’Hara. Hunters need to hike a lot in order to access areas where deer can be found.
Unit 109 has two major access points. One access point to this area is via the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, and the second is via Road 401 to access the southern section of Pat O’Hara Mountain and Rattlesnake Mountain. Maps displaying land ownership are recommended. Roads in this area lead to the higher elevation locations of Bald Ridge and Rattlesnake. Four-wheel drive is recommended to access parts of this unit.
Lower elevations consist of sagebrush and grasses with spotty juniper draws. Higher elevations blend thick lodgepole pine, juniper and quaking aspen that open up into large parks.
Cody is the nearest town and provides hunters with many lodging options, restaurants and gas stations. Camping on State land in Wyoming is prohibited, but hunters can camp on BLM in a specific location for up to 16 days within any 28-day period. The only established campground in the unit is Hogan-Luce, accessible by Road 7RP off Highway 120.
