This bighorn sheep hunting area is located in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, on the south side of the Salmon River and the west side of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.
Hunting bighorn sheep in this unit can be challenging. Mature rams are limited in number and can hide in many square miles of rough terrain.
This sheep area includes only the eastern half of Farrow Mountain. The northeast corner is across the Salmon River from the mouth of Horse Creek. The entire unit is in Idaho County, except for the southern tip which is located in Valley County. This area is mountainous and the lowest elevations are found near the Salmon River. The highest point is Cottonwood Butte, with several other ridges and peaks at elevations between 8,250 and 9,250 feet.
Hunters can access this area using horses, flying in on remote landing strips, backpacking and floating the Middle Fork or the Main Salmon. All land in this area is in the wilderness, so motorized vehicles or wheeled vehicles are prohibited. To backpack or hunt by horse, hunters can drive down the River Road along the Salmon River to the Stoddard Pack Bridge, which crosses the river into the north end of the unit.
Forest fires have affected much of the land, so most of this unit is open and beneficial for glassing. Low brush and grasses cover a lot of ground in this area. A few patches of conifer forest remain, but most trees are scattered and sparse. Sheep can be found just about anywhere in this hunting area. Pines, firs and spruce grow on a few slopes, and some dense woods can be found between Farrow Mountain and Twin Peak.
Hunters that do not hire an outfitter can plan to pack in a tent. Spike camping from a backpack tent allows hunters to have the mobility needed to cover as much country as possible while scouting or hunting. Be sure to carry a water filter pump.
