This can be a tough hunt, but gives hunters the chance to hunt wild sheep in remote wilderness terrain on the east side of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.
Unit 27-3 has a large part of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness on the eastern side of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The southeastern boundary is Silver Creek-Meyers Cove Road and the land here is mostly mountainous with some large canyons and steep mountains.
Most of the land here is roadless, but hunters can reach part of this unit by driving on the Silver Creek-Meyers Cove Road and hiking from there. Flying services like Sawtooth Flying Service, Arnold Aviation and McCall Aviation can fly hunters to the edge of the unit. The Middle Fork of the Salmon River gives access by raft to some wilderness spots, but most can only be reached by horseback or on foot.
Most of the terrain is open and has grassy slopes with scattered brush and timber patches, high mountain meadows, alpine basins, and rugged mountains. North and east-facing slopes and deep draws are mainly timbered with spruces, pines and firs. Some areas have been burned by forest fires and are ideal for game with grass and browse plants taking hold and new trees start growing. Old growth forests are mostly sterile, and don’t support a lot of game.
Some hunters camp along dirt roads here, and there are no towns close enough for motel lodging. Most guided hunters typically stay in wall tent camps. Do-it-yourself hiking hunters use backpack-style tents and are allowed to camp almost anywhere in the unit.
