Located east and northeast of the Stanley Basin, this Rocky Mountain sheep hunting area consists of the Yankee Fork drainage of the Salmon River.
This is one of the more accessible Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep units in Idaho.
Mountains ranging from 8,500-10,329 feet surround this area on both sides of Yankee Fork, which runs for about 28 miles before draining into the Salmon River at an elevation of about 5,900 feet. The ridges and mountains that drain into the river tend to be steep and some of them have cliffs, large rock slides and large barren areas where sheep feed on grass.
The majority of the land here is federal property managed as part of the Salmon Challis National Forest. The main roads are Forest Road 70 and Forest Road 172. Numerous trails within this unit are restricted to motorcycles and are closed to motorcycles on September 30 but are open to hikers and horseback riders. Only a couple of trails are designated for ATV use and the main one connects Eightmile Campground with Estes Mountain. Hunters must hike a great deal to reach rams in rough terrain.
The higher ground above the timberline is made up of bare rock in the form of talus slopes, cliffs, outcroppings and rock slides. Low shrubs, forbs, lichens, mosses and wild grasses grow on rocks, high ridges and in alpine basins. Most north and east slopes below 9,800 feet are forested with spruces, firs and pines. Some the dead forests are a tangle of fallen trees with smaller trees, shrubs, forbs and grass growing among the downfalls. Many southern and western slopes are largely treeless and covered with sagebrush and other short shrubs. Forests in this area include aspens, spruces, firs and pines. Willows, birches and other brush can be seen growing along creeks.
Sheep hunters can stay in tents packed in by horse or backpack. At least 11 campgrounds are within unit boundaries along Yankee Fork. Motel lodging is located far away from the area.
