This area is part of the Pahsimeroi Mountains and the connected Lost River Mountains.
Hunters here should be prepared for steep hikes in high country, but most rams can be roughly four miles away from a road. Some rams are occasionally taken from the steep breaks above the Salmon River.
This sheep hunting area is made up of parts of three deer and elk units — 37, 50 and 51. It also includes the Pahsimeroi Mountains and the Lost River Mountains. The Pahsimeroi portion is south and east of the Salmon River. The mountains here are steep and rugged in some places and are typically higher than 8,000 feet.
Most land is public with good road access to trailheads in the high country, which is mainly roadless. The Salmon-Challis National Forest manages most of the land above 8,000 feet. Private farms and marshes can typically be found in the valleys with the biggest pieces of private land near Arco, Howe and in the Pahsimeroi Valley in the northeastern part of the unit. Most roads here are open to all motor vehicles. ATVs are allowed, but are not allowed off road or on any trail that is not for full-size vehicles.
The edges of the mountains here are timbered by junipers, pinyon pines, mahoganies, Douglas firs and some ponderosa pines with other species of firs and spruces. The higher ridges and mountains are mainly barren with rock and grassy slopes with patches of scrub and basins with meadows. The valleys on the edges of the unit are mostly covered with sagebrush and wild grasses with bitterbrush, serviceberry, maple brush and chokecherry. Farm crops can be found near Arco and Howe and along the western and eastern boundaries of the unit. They mainly consist of irrigated alfalfa fields that are watered by center-pivot irrigation wheels. Some wheat and barley is grown in dry farms.
Sheep hunters usually camp either at a trailhead or in the backcountry. More than a dozen campgrounds are in the valleys on the outer edges of the area, with only one campground on Forest Road 539 near Hilts Creek. Hunters can stay at the Pioneer Motel and RV Park, Watermark Inn and the Northgate Inn Motel. Lodging can also be found at the Arco Inn Motel, the DK Motel and the Lost River Motel.
