This unit is located in central Montana, north of Interstate 90. The unit takes in the majority of the Shields River drainage along Highway 89, north of Livingston.
A majority of the antelope reside on private land with stable populations that have seen a slight increase.
This area encompasses the Shields River Valley and its tributaries. Irrigated fields are adjacent to the river and creeks. Above the fields are rolling hills of grass and sagebrush. The terrain is broken enough to allow for great spot and stalk and allows for easy walking.
The unit has numerous gravel county roads spread throughout. Most of the antelope reside on private land. Access can be an issue but there are numerous ranches that allow public hunting. There are state sections and several block management areas in this unit. Bring a map showing land ownership into the field with you.
The river and streams riparian corridors are made up of cottonwoods and willows. Irrigated agriculture fields are adjacent to the rivers and streams, along with uplands that are a mix of tame and native grasslands. A slight gain in elevation and sagebrush becomes more and more of an element throughout the district. There are isolated pockets of pines, cedar and junipers scattered about the district. There are no antelope in the heavy timbered headwaters of the Shields River.
Livingston is only seven miles from the southwest corner of the unit and has numerous motels, restaurants and gas stations. The small town of Wilsall within the unit has a small motel, gas and a diner. Camping is allowed on the National Forest at the headwaters of the Shields River.
