This hunt district is directly north of Dillon. The district is made up of two separate mountain ranges. The Highland Mountains are in the east and the Pioneer Mountains are to the west. The sheep are located almost entirely on National Forest or BLM. It is a rugged mountainous area with high peaks and lots of timber up high.

Historically this area was known for having giant rams and then in 1995 they had a massive die-off. The sheep have never recovered even with transplanting efforts.

This district starts along the Big Hole River and gains elevation up to the peaks in both mountain ranges to 10,000 feet. The lower elevations are open ridges, with rocky outcroppings. The middle elevations are rough mountains covered in timber with scattered open parks. The upper elevations are mountain peaks of rock and lush high mountain basins.

There are numerous access points into both mountain ranges and roads throughout, but the upper elevations will be on foot. Most accesses will be from Interstate 15, but access can also be obtained into the Pioneer Mountains from Highway 43 on the north.

The riparian areas adjacent to the streams are a mix of cottonwood and willows. The hills adjacent are covered in grass and sagebrush. Above the open grassland ridges starts the conifer forest of fir and pines, scattered throughout are open parks and hillsides. Many of the peaks are rocky with sub alpine grasses and forbs.

There are numerous places to camp throughout this district. It is possible to camp at the trailheads and day hunt this district. Some hunters backpack into some of the remote areas and camp in sheep country. It is also possible to stay at a motel in Dillon or Butte and day hunt.
