This unit’s major landmark is the Tobin Range. This unit holds mule deer, antelope and desert bighorn sheep. Road access is good in low elevations and poor in higher terrain, but hunters can hike into all areas.

This unit has a small sheep herd. Bighorn is for resident hunters only.

From flat and mild lowlands in the valleys at about 4,700 feet above sea level, terrain steeply rises to about 9,775 feet on Mount Tobin. Natural and artificial water sources are scattered.

Mostly public land, but small parcels of private land lie on the eastern and western sides of the Tobin Range. Few roads lead into the upper parts of the Tobin Range, which is completely accessible to hikers. Grass Valley Road accesses the west side of the Tobin Range, while the Buffalo Valley and Jersey Valley roads are the roads to reach the east side. Jersey Valley Road also accesses the south. Smelser Pass Road connects the Buffalo Valley and Grass Valley roads and reaches northern areas. Primitive roads stem from primary routes.

Sagebrush dominates most of the unit. Some areas are timbered by pinyon and juniper stands. Scattered stands of aspen grow in a few high drainages.

Carry plenty of supplies, food, water and spare tires. If you hunt the east side of the Tobin Range, the closest motels are in Battle Mountain. If you hunt the western Tobin Range, the closest motels are in Winnemucca. Hunters may camp almost anywhere on public land.
