Much of this large unit burned in 2006 and is now covered with a variety of grasses and forbs, providing great feed for elk, mule deer and antelope. Some aspen stands remain and are recovering from the fire. Elko is at the southern tip, while the northern boundary is about 50 miles north.

Hunters who like glassing and stalking enjoy this part of the state because terrain is wide open.

This unit is mostly composed of valleys and low foothills from at 5,100-6,000 feet above sea level to a few mountains with benches. Peaks are as high as 8,204-foot Stag Mountain. Terrain drains into tributaries of the Humboldt River as well as the Marys River, which runs along the eastern edge.

A two-wheel-drive vehicle can navigate most of the main roads, which are dirt or gravel. Branching from them are primitive roads. Some land around water sources is private, but access to public land is not impeded by deeded property. The southern boundary is Interstate 80 from Elko to the Deeth Exit. The eastern border is Marys River, the western border is State Route 225, and the northern boundary is formed by Charleston, Charleston-Deeth and Marys River-Orange Bridge roads

Most of the area is covered with a variety of grasses and brush, mainly sagebrush and other species that are commonly called buckbrush. Some aspen stands remain in the Stag Mountain area and continue to recover from the fire in 2006.

A good amount of hunters camp on public lands. Elko has plenty of places to stay, including hotels, motels, campgrounds and RV parks.
