Unit 21A in New Mexico presents a varied hunting landscape with significant water presence, albeit making it challenging to sit over waterholes, particularly in the northern areas. The unit is generally appreciated for its beautiful backcountry but it isn't renowned for bugling activity or large elk numbers during the second season. There's potential for good coues and mule deer hunting, especially around Winston and the edges of private lands where elk often move to. However, many hunters report high traffic from road hunters, so getting a few miles deep into the unit might be advantageous. Backpacking into difficult-to-access areas could increase your chances of encountering mature game, but do plan on bringing in extra water, as sources can be unreliable particularly during dry seasons.
