This unit is located in the north central part of the state. It is made up of almost entirely private land and regulated by the Cheyenne River Reservation. Hunting here with a state issued license is only available on private alnds and walk-in areas.
With very limited public access there are very few hunters headed to this unit without a plan around hunting on the reservation.
Overall this unit is made up of raw prairie with scattered creek beds throughout. There is not much elevation change to speak of across the unit outside of a few isolated buttes that are scattered in the southern half of the unit. The Cheyenne River makes up the southern boundary of this unit. You can expect to see an extensive amount of agriculture around the most notable town in the north center of the unit Dupree but outside of that it is rather limited.
Highway 212 runs east and west across the center of the unit. This highway runs through the town of Dupree, SD. Highway 20 also crosses the unit running east and west at the top of the unit. As a general rule each of these routes will allow access to all corners of the unit with county and less established two-tracks across the unit.
You’ll see a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles as well as countless species of wildflowers in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of both the Cheyenne River as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.
There are no established campgrounds in this unit. If you are looking to stay in this unit the most likely places would be in Dupree or Faith, SD and just outside of the unit in Eagle Butte, SD. Each of these towns have locally owned hotels, as well as groceries and gas and can be found along Highway 212.
