This massive unit makes up the vast majority of the western half of the state. Elk exist in this unit in very limited numbers and encounters are not a common occurrence. Hunters who find success on this hunt generally have inside knowledge from landowners who have elk present on their land. DIY hunters can find themselves really struggling on this hunt without some great knowledge of local elk herds before the hunt.
Very few elk are found within this massive unit and success is generally found through local knowledge and private land access.
This unit is classic South Dakota Prairie country with wide open prairies, winding creek and river bottoms, and patches of mature timber stands. Agricultural lands dot the landscape and exist heavily around major water sources. Elk will be very nomadic and scattered and, in some portions of the unit, just nonexistent.
This massive unit is largely dominated by private land and nearly all of the success found in this unit will take place in these areas. Scattered patches of public land and walk-in area dot the landscape but success on these areas typically relies on elk even being present, which is oftentimes not the case.
A mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers can be found in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of river and small creek beds scattered across the unit.
Modern lodging and gear needs can be met in many of the large towns throughout the unit and many smaller communities will have limited availability of these. Depending on the area you plan to hunt it may be important to secure gear and grocery needs before leaving for the hunt.
