CU1 is the only unit that is completely public land and made up of the Custer State Park. Good numbers of bison are found within the park and anyone lucky enough to hold a tag will be in for a great hunt.

Typically one of the easier bison hunts available, due to the fact that a guide from Custer State Park will be with you, to help identify which bison may be taken. Local taxidermists are available to prepare a cape for shipping or for complete service in mounting the animal.

Custer State park is made up of entirely public land, which can be heavily timbered and features many rolling ridges and drainages. Roads exist in good numbers in the northern half of the unit and physically accessing most of the area won't be an issue. The southern half of the unit doesn't have near as many roads and there will be plenty of spots to get away from hunters. Highway 87 runs the length of the unit from north to south, allowing for complete access to the unit.

Highway 87 runs the entire length of the unit on the western edge. The highway provides the most direct access to the unit while many county and forest service roads provide good access to the northern half of the unit. The southern half has a lot less roads and makes for a much more rugged portion of the unit. Highway 79 runs along the eastern side of the unit, that could allow some access from that side. With this unit being entirely public land, hunters will find little trouble in locating huntable areas.

Many of the higher elevation areas are heavily timbered with stands of primarily Ponderosa pines but hunters will also encounter white spruce, aspen, bur ok, and paper birch. Some juniper can be found in lower elevations. Natural grasses will be present throughout the unit but will be in the greatest abundance in more open areas and at lower elevations.

The town of Custer is found to the west of the unit, which will have all the town amenities that you might need as far as food and gas. To the very southeast is the town of Hot Springs where you can find the same. Modern campgrounds can be found throughout the area and hunters are also permitted to camp on public lands.
