Unit 4A is located in the west-central portion of the state with Unit 57A to the north, 42A to the east, 40A and 56A to the south, and 33A to the west. This unit is rather remote with very little services across the bulk of the it except for a few small townships along some of the main roads, the biggest being Huron. This unit is primarily private land with the only public land available being a few scattered walk-in areas and some waterfowl production areas. If you are planning a hunt here it would be best if you arrive with prior arrangements made on some portion of private land, without doing so you will be very limited.
James River runs through this unit and offers some fantastic habitat if you can gain access, as well as miles of rolling hills covered in CRP and prairie grass.
There is only a few hundred feet of elevation change across the entire unit. Elevation will drop as you move from west to east and from north to south. The bulk of the unit is very flat with little roll to the overall landscape.
Highways 14, 281, and 37 are the main travel routes in the unit giving access to countless roads covering the majority of the unit which makes navigating through the unit fairly simple.
A mix of short and tall prairie grass and countless species of wildflowers can be found in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse amounts of timber including a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak are located along the riparian zone of the James River, as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.
Located basically in the center of the unit, Huron has a population of almost 14,000 people and offers many options in the food, lodging, and shopping categories. If you are looking for a place to camp options are limited, but there are a few established campgrounds in Huron.
