This remote unit is located in the central-eastern portion of the state along the Minnesota border. There are very few services across the bulk of the unit except for a few small townships, the biggest being Brookings. The major river running through this unit is the Big Sioux River, which offers some fantastic habitat, as well as miles of rolling hills covered in CRP and prairie grass.
This unit is primarily private land with very few walk-in areas. If you are planning a hunt in this unit it would be best if you arrive with prior arrangements made on some portion of private land as you will be very limited otherwise.
The elevation change is intermittent throughout the unit due to the minimal change. The bulk of the unit is very flat with little roll to the overall landscape.
Interstate 29, and Highways 30, 14, and 13 offer access to countless roads covering the majority of the unit making it fairly easy to navigate from point a to point b.
A mix of short and tall prairie grass and countless species of wildflowers can be found in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse amounts of timber including a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak are located along the riparian zone of the Big Sioux River.
Located almost dead center in the unit off of Interstate 29 is Brookings, SD. With a population of almost 25,000 people it offers all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. There are a number of lodging options from bigger chains to locally owned hotels. If you are looking for a place to camp, there are very limited locations in the unit but there are a few established campgrounds in Brookings.
