This unique unit is located near the Cheyenne River Reservation. With just under 3,000 total acres it is a relatively small unit. The main terrain feature is the Little Moreau River which winds its way through the bulk of the unit. 99% of this unit is open to hunting and offers an excellent chance to harvest a whitetail for hunters who are willing to put some dirt on their boots and cover some ground. The unit only has one road that enters in the southeast corner of the unit and quickly dead ends at the one established campground on the edges of Little Moreau Lake. This unit provides a great opportunity for success for hunters who are willing to put in the effort. The rifle permit available through the state draw system is only good for a whitetail deer, so be sure of your target while hunting in this unit.
There is a good population of whitetail found throughout this unique unit, and quality deer have been harvested in the past.
The entire unit is just less than 3,000 total acres which are just over 4.5 square miles. The Little Moreau River winds its way across the entire unit as the main terrain feature of the unit. There are many smaller systems draining into this river which culminates in the southeast corner as it fills the Little Moreau Lake. Although there is little elevation change across this unit, it is a rather broken landscape throughout with countless smaller cuts and ravines leading into the main river. The tree rows are another terrain feature that provides unique habitat that can be overlooked given the main river bottom that most hunters will be focusing on.
There is only one road into this unit which will lead you to the parking area and campground at Little Moreau Lake. To access this one route you will need to head south out of the town of Timber Lake, SD. In town, this will be H Street and as you leave town and pass the airport you will be on County Road 5A. Approximately 4 miles south of town you will be bordering the unit, and another mile or so south you will enter the unit as you approach Little Moreau Lake. All hunting will need to be conducted on foot as there are no other roads in the unit.
This unit consists of a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers in most areas. There is also land that is used for agricultural purposes. Sections of dense timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of the Little Moreau River as well as the smaller drainages scattered across the unit.
Timber Lake South Dakota is located approximately 4 miles north of the unit. This very small town has one hotel, the Limit Lodge and Cabins, and it also has a small grocery store as well as fuel. If you are looking for a place to camp, there is one established campground in the unit at the end of the road as you approach Little Moreau Lake.
