This unit is on the southern border of the state. The Missouri river is dammed up on the eastern side of the unit and makes up the entire eastern boundary. Due to this area being dammed up it is called Lake Francis Case. The South Dakota Game and Fish owns and manages all of the ground surrounding the lake. Although public land and walk-in access is very limited in this unit, there are miles of ground along the lake that are open to the public and allows more opportunity to hunt.
With very limited public access there are few hunters headed to this unit without a plan around hunting some private property.
Lake Francis Case on the eastern side of the unit makes up the most notable terrain feature in the unit. It consists of classic lake shore terrain you would expect to find in the midwest. There are pockets of timber scattered along the banks as well as some marshy areas, and numerous small tributary creeks running into the lake. The bulk of the unit is a mixture of agriculture and prairie.
State highway 44 runs east to west along the northern side of the unit and eventually goes across a bridge that spans the Missouri River. As you approach the river there are turn offs onto two tracks that can take you north and south along the banks of the lake. You can also access the lake from highway 18. It angles down to the east across the unit and eventually levels out going east to west towards the bottom of the unit where it also crosses the river.
You will find a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers in most areas. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of both the lake and small creeks scattered across the unit.
There are numerous established camping sights up and down the lake, but primitive camping is less likely, check for current conditions and regulations before you travel. If you are looking for a motel, gas, groceries etc. you will need to plan on finding these in either Platte, SD on the east side of the river in the northern part of the unit off of Highway 44 or Bonesteel, SD on highway 18 in the southern part of the unit.
