Located on the north and south side of Interstate 90 this unit's eastern boundary is the Missouri River. There are also approximately 6 miles of White River that spills into the Missouri River in the unit. At first glance there is relatively no public land to access when hunting this unit, but being that South Dakota Game and Fish owns all of the ground up and down the banks of the rivers there is more to hunt that first meets the eye. Overall this is a whitetail destination, and seeing a mule deer in this part of the state would be rare.
With very limited public access there are few hunters headed to this unit without a plan around hunting some private property.
This long narrow unit runs north and south along the Missouri River. The huntable ground is almost entirely classic riparian terrain along the Missouri River and the banks of the White River in the far northern portion of the unit. This being said there are some areas of private ground as you get further from the river that would be more classic prairie and agriculture. There are small creeks that head down to the river scattered across the unit as well.
Interstate 90 cuts across the unit moving east and west and crosses the river in the town of Chamberlain, SD. Highway 47 runs north and south and makes the western boundary to the unit. There are many roads that lead to the river off of this highway but the bulk of them are private and not county roads. When accessing the river, be sure to stay on public right of ways. Highway 44 moves from the western side of the unit and makes up the southern boundary which will grant you access to different parts of the river.
There is a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles throughout the unit as well as countless species of wildflowers in most areas outside of the land used for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of both the Missouri and White Rivers as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.
There are a few established campgrounds along the river in the far north and far south side of the unit, but very little in between. If you are looking for hotels, groceries, and gas you can find these in Chamberlain, SD in the far north and across the river in Platte, SD in the far south.
