Located approximately 30 miles northeast of Rapid City this remote unit lies along the north shore of the Belle Fourche River as well as the Cheyenne River on the far east side. If you are looking for a classic prairie unit comprised of countless creek bottoms and miles of raw prairie you will find just that in this large unit. There is very little public access here so prior arrangements to hunt private land need to be made or you will have very little ground to hunt. There are great populations of both whitetail and mule deer throughout the unit. Other than the town of Faith, there are many small townships throughout the unit in which amenities are quite sparse. Hunters need to come prepared for a remote-style hunt and should have what they need before they arrive.
With very limited public access there are few hunters headed to this Unit without a plan around hunting some private property. There are some reports of some great bucks of both species in this unit.
The Belle Fourche River is the most notable terrain feature in this unit making up the southern border. As you head north you will find miles and miles of classic prairie, some areas being much more broken than others. There is scattered agriculture across the unit, but as a whole, there is very little. There are a number of creek beds throughout the unit which make for excellent deer habitat.
State Highway 34 runs east and west through this unit in the southern half. Off of this highway, there are a number of county roads heading north and south. The most notable is Stoneville Road on the western side of the unit heading north out of Union Center. As well as Elm Springs Road heading south out of Enning and Avance Road heading north on the eastern side of the unit. State Highway 73 heads north of Highway 34 on the far east side of the unit. There are many less notable county roads throughout the unit coming off of each of these routes. Taking them will allow you to access all corners of the unit. US Highway 212 runs along the northern border and will take you into some of the highest concentrations of walk-in land in the unit, just west of the town of Faith. Being that there is very little public land in this unit, be sure to make prior arrangements before arriving for the hunt as there is very little public access in the entire hunt area.
You will find a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers outside of the areas that are used for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of the Belle Fourche and Cheyenne Rivers as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.
Other than Faith, South Dakota in the far northeast corner where you will find most anything you would need, there are a number of small towns throughout the unit, but as a general rule, this is a rather remote hunting unit. There are few amenities in any area of the unit and it would be wise to call ahead prior to arrival to ensure that any existing shops or fuel stations are still open and operating when you arrive.
