Located in south-central SD, this unit is primarily private land. The majority of that is a large portion of the Rosebud Reservation. The only notable access is a small walk-in area in the far southwest corner. If you are planning a hunt in this unit it would be best if you arrive with prior arrangements made on some portion of private land as you will be very limited without.
With very limited public access there are very few hunters headed to this Unit without a plan around hunting some private property.
There is very little elevation change across the unit. The most notable feature in this unit consists of the broken hill terrain of the Rosebud Reservation to the west. As you move from west to east and from south to north there are not quite a thousand feet of elevation change across the entire unit. There are several small creeks that run throughout the unit.
US Highway 18 runs east to west near the north end of the unit and Highway 83 runs north to south in the central part of the unit. Overall there are countless country roads covering the majority of the unit which makes navigating very simple. The majority of the unit consists of the Rosebud Indian Reservation and private ground. Obtaining permission to hunt private property is recommended before hunting this unit.
You will find a mix of short and tall prairie grass across the unit as well as countless species of wildflowers that can be found in most areas of the unit that aren’t used for agricultural purposes. The majority of timber lies on the Rosebud Reservation, with small areas of cottonwoods along the creeks that span across the unit.
Located in the north-central section of the unit along Highway 18 is Mission, South Dakota. This town has a population of just under a thousand people. This being said it has a number of amenities you would not normally find in a town this small from drug stores and trading posts as well as locally owned restaurants and a few fast food chains. You should be able to get anything you may need outside of any major sporting goods purchases. Lodging is very limited. There are no motels or camping areas within the unit. Along Highway 83 to the south is Valentine, Nebraska which has a number of hotels and motels you can choose from.
