This unit lies in the central portion of the Black Hills and is home to the famed Mount Rushmore. Low elk densities are found in this unit and many of the huntable areas are designated wilderness, or roadless, and are physically tough to reach. Hunting successfully in this unit will require a lot of focus, physical preparation, and determination.
Low densities of elk are found in this largely roadless and remote unit. Hard hunting will be required to fill a tag.
Most of this unit is heavily timbered and features many rolling ridges and drainages. Roads exist in good numbers I'm some areas of the unit and physically accessing most of these areas will not be too much trouble. Some areas, particularly on the southern end, are roadless or designated wilderness and will require a great deal of physical exertion to access.
Highways 16 and 16a will provide the most direct access into the unit but many county and forest service roads split from these and lead into most corners of the unit. A decent amount of roadless ground is available in this unit and hunters will need to work hard to reach these. Public lands dominate most of this area and DIY hunts will find little trouble in locating huntable areas.
Many of the higher elevation areas are heavily timbered with stands of primarily Ponderosa pines but hunters will also encounter white spruce, aspen, bur ok, and paper birch. Some juniper can be found in lower elevations. Natural grasses will be present throughout the unit but will in the greatest abundance in more open areas and at lower elevations.
There are some scattered modern and primitive lodging options available in the area around Mount Rushmore but most of this unit is fairly empty in terms of amenities. Hunters will need to make sure all gear needs are met prior to leaving for the hunt. Rapid City is located just northeast of the unit and is the cloest option for most needs.
