This small unit is located on the west side of the state within the proper Southwest, Desert unit. A small population of elk will be found here but hunters will have very generous season dates to fill their tag. This area is almost entirely public and hunters will have plenty of options when it comes to selecting hunting spots. Most of the elk in this area will be found near agricultural crops in the evenings and then will often times move into public lands to bed for the day. Small numbers of elk can be found here but good season dates and loads of public land will help.
This area is primarily flat desert land with several island mountain ranges throughout the central portion of the unit. These small island ranges climb off the valley for 1,500-2,000 feet and provide good habitat for local elk and other game. Traversing some of these areas can be next to impossible due to knife ridges and cliffs but physical exertion won’t be insanely rough.
A decent road system will deliver hunters into most areas throughout most of the unit. Hunters will need to hike when hunting the mountain ranges as very little road access exists here. Traversing these areas can be taxing but not terrible.
The low elevation areas will be comprised largely of desert-type areas with large expanses of open ground with patches of sage and pinyon juniper. In the higher elevations, this vegetation type will continue but pinyon juniper will grow much more densely.
There is no modern lodging found within the unit but a few options can be found in nearby Baker, Nevada. Groceries and sporting goods will need to be purchased prior to the hunt.
