The Capitol State Forest dominates the center of this unit, taking in the Black Hills. The perimeter follows major roads and thus is more populated and privately owned with a mix of farmland, single-family rural properties, tree farms, timber, and a touch of wildlife refuge land.
Elk hunting can be very tough in this unit.
Capitol Peak stands at 2,589-ft and over looks a rolling conifer forest that is heavily clear-cut and has been replanted. The broad, fertile valleys consist of agricultural land with new rural single-family acreages being developed.
The majority of the unit is the Capitol State Forest, with easy access. The perimeter is largely farmland, and private access should definitely be looked into here as the deer work the edge covers.
Conifer forests here are heavily farmed for timber and are in various stages of regrowth. Along with the timber industries, the land is also used for orchards, tree farms, vegetables, and dairy farms.
Primitive camping in the National Forest along northern border is allowed for the majority of the year, but various fire bans and forest road closures may happen, so double check any restrictions or permits necessary prior to your trip. If you are more interested in a bed and a shower, as well as staying closer to gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store, your best options will be local B&B’s and hotels in Rochester, McCleary and Elma.
